If your father tells me that you told him "X," with all other things being equal, I have no reason to disbelieve that you told him "X." But I also have no reason to believe that "X" is true, simply because your father told me that you said it.

Now, to make your analogy a bit more accurate.

If your father told me that you told him that your husband told you that his parent told him "X," I would still have no reason to disbelieve that you told him "X." But I would also have no reason to believe that "X" actually happened" or that the recitation from the husband to you or from the in-laws to husband were an accurate recitation.

Now, add in the politics and family dynamics. If "X" were true, it would help your father politically, despite the fact that he has no knowledge whether "X" is (in fact) true.

Even if "X" were false, are the in-laws likely to step forward and say that your father is stretching the truth (and thereby damage familial relations), if the truth or falsity of "X" has not real bearing on their lives?
