If you think about this; it makes total sense. DiCaprio would have changed Hardy's character into some souless wealthy smartass who is just going by the orders of the company.

And Hardy would be Leo's character as some outcast hardass left for dead. Expendable help. But who is a real trapper and can survive unlike DiCaprio and his pretender company group.

Company men vs. survivalist. And maybe they watch him get mauled because they already have the pelts and don't want to have to pay him.

And he wakes up totally confused and makes it back to camp and he can't fully remember what happend but everyone treats him likes he's just part of the team and gives him his pay...but as he's leaving, he sees something that reminds him of his fellow trappers laughing as he gets mauled...ala Eastwood in High Plains Drifter...and they just watch him.

And that's when Hardy knows. And that's when the movie begins.
