It wasn’t major when it first started out. I watched it from the beginning but it is kind of known that iTunes/Video iPod is what gave the show its first boost after it had kind of a middling start.

I guess I can quote an NBC executive if that helps you out:

We’re into the semantics now. My point was the The Office was kind of the internet’s first “binge” show. People got Apple devices and watched a bunch of shows in succession. By doing so, they got to pick up on the depth of the humor in the show.
