I do it every year, usually a week in the fall and a week in the spring. Sometimes they give me a hard time if I exceed the allotted number of absences for the year, but I really don't care.

2nd grade is fine, we did Disney and pulled our kids out one time
Just make sure they are not missing any important testing that might be harder to make up.
