I suffered through all of book one and about 200 pages of book 2.

Erickson is talented and his writing is beautiful but he's boring as frick to me.

You were almost there, I think the story picks up just a bit after that once you get to know the characters. Some time down the road when you search for something to read, pick up book 2 again and give it a shot.

Reading it directly after book 1 is tough as well. He is one author I actually don't recommend reading in a row. Its too tough of a hall, certainly not easy to burn through pages like a lot of other fantasy. Certainly take breaks after each "section" of the overall series and some stand-alone books.
