Don't worry about the hopeful if you want a normal balanced life. When people get older they generally start to extract less personal self esteem from the teams they rooted for as children.
I find myself rooting for and against players more than teams when the better players are on teams I don't root for or against. And that has been kind of fun.

See seeing division rivals suck terribly then thrive (Astros) just makes it worse. They went from laughing stock to champs in no time. Meanwhile, the Mariners can't even win over 90 games in 17 years.
I visited Seattle a few years ago and felt like a kid going to the stadium. I did the behind the scenes tour of Safeco Field and impressed the tour guide with my knowledge of those 90s teams, especially living so far away in LA.
