xbox live gold - newb question

I was told you guys know your shite so here it goes;
I tried to download something last night and it said I have to have gold to download it, but it is still letting me play games online
I logged into my account on the computer and I didn't see it under my subscriptions...so I check my bank account statement and see that in december I bought 3 months which should've ended in march
1. Why would it still let me play online if my subscription ended
2. Do I need gold to play online
3. If I do buy more months of gold am I going to have to pay for the months I've been playing online basically for free
super confused and obviously I'm not a huge gamer so just looking for a little help

What games are you playing online without gold?
I think you can play most games without gold but you should not be able to play games online with others players (I believe).
If you do buy more months of gold I do not see why you would be charged for the past months. That would be strange.

this week ive played pubg & fortnite online with friends
just last night I played with a friend, quit and tried downloading some random baseball game and it wouldn't let me saying I don't have gold

That is strange. I didn't think you could play either of those games without gold. Anyone else care to chime in? That seems odd.

Microsoft sent me a bill once for Xbox Live that I had been using for a few months after I got a new debit card and the recurring charges didn't go through. IIRC I called and fought it and they dropped the bill.

You're definitely not supposed to be able to playing online multiplayer games without a gold subscription.

You shouldn't get any back charges if the first time all you did was buy like the 3 month package. If somehow you have still been able to play online when that 3 month subscription ended, well that just seems like an oversight on Microsoft's part.

You paid for three months of service. If they didn't shut the service off after the three months, and aren't charging your credit card, might as well ride it out

You can check online. Just go to xbox.com, log in to your account, then click your name and go to subscriptions.
It'll show you what you are subscribed to and past subscriptions that have expired.
