A free press in a democracy is the window of the voters to see what elected officials are really doing. In order to accomplish this the press must be free to report on activities various illegal and/or unethical politician(s) may be up to, free from political reprisal from said politician(s). It's the voters' way of having some larger and more immediate level of accountability for elected officials.
