Geothermal Units

Anyone ever considered a geothermal unit for their house?

I put one on my barn/workshop. Humidity in South LA is a bit much to make these units worthwhile. unless you are going to drill a well and have some place to dump the hot water, do not waste your time and money. You are better off with a high efficiency air exchange unit (some call it high seer rating) Note that the seer rating on the Geo units do not include pump HP
My only salvation from the project is that I use swimming pool water to dissipate heat from the unit. Helps keep pool warm and shop cool

Back in the early 80s I worked on the White building on Perkins at Quail run between Essen and College and it had Geothermal installed during construction....not sure how advanced the systems are from the 80s.... but be prepared to have a lot of holes drilled around the house.... If I remember correctly we drilled a hole every 8 ft around the building..each hole was 160 ft deep.... supposedly as the hot water circulates through the piping it returns cooled down back to the unit
