The left began calling themselves progressive, it wasn't a term hoisted upon them.


Liberalism, in most cases, simply doesn't apply to the modern democratic party. Classical liberalism means liberty, laissez faire, small government. On some social issues that applies to Democrats, but other than that, it isn't an accurate portrayal of the american left.

Neither party is classically liberal.
