Americans elect a president and expect him to implement his policies. When his employees don’t, it’s normal and traditional for him to ask them to resign.
Let’s look at a few Democrats.
FDR, “Because of a succession of recent events both here and abroad, and not within our personal choice and control, I find it necessary now to make certain readjustments. I have to include in this a change in the War Department - and that is why I am asking that you let me have your resignation.”
Truman, “I fired MacArthur because he wouldn’t respect the authority of the president. I didn’t fire him because he was a dumb son of a bitch, although he was.”
LBJ. Bill Moyers, 'I just came from a conversation with the President. 'He told me he was going to fire everybody who didn't agree with him.”
Carter. New York Times, Conflict Over the Cabinet, August 12, 1979:
“When the Carter Administration is studied in years to come, the verdict will probably be that the Cabinet failure of his first two years was caused more by Jimmy Carter himself than by the members of his Cabinet. If he had been a stronger leader of his Cabinet, he might have molded them into a positive force in his Administration. If he had been more popular in the country as a whole, higher in the polls, he would have had greater respect from the Cabinet officers and they would have tried fewer end runs around him in pursuit of their own, particular interests.”
Clinton, the same. Obama fired a general like Truman did.
In short, it’s my way or the highway.
