Trains are easy and efficient to the major tourist areas & population centers. To me, many of the interesting and beautiful things in Italy lie in the countryside. Regional trains aren’t really an option for exploring the south (unless you have an unlimited time schedule), or for enjoying farm stay lodgings, visiting vineyards, etc.

Rented a car. The nav system took us into Florence at 5pm. I felt like Clark griswold at the multi lane traffic circle with mopeds and motorcycles surrounding me.

I would rent a car again but it does suck because whoever is driving doesn't get to see as much.
