A car isn't useless if you're staying in the Tuscan countryside or something similar.

Trains are easy and efficient to the major tourist areas & population centers. To me, many of the interesting and beautiful things in Italy lie in the countryside. Regional trains aren’t really an option for exploring the south (unless you have an unlimited time schedule), or for enjoying farm stay lodgings, visiting vineyards, etc.

We stayed in montecatini, but went to venice, florence and milan. The tolls were more than train cost. And I couldnt drink the wine I wanted if I woulda had to drive back
