It’s because Hollywood doesn’t have faith in the property.
For the record, I think they are wrong. I think if you make a quality story with good production value, people with like it. But they think D&D is a non-starter for a franchise with deep nerd stigma.
Thus, all we ever get from the D&D property is schlock due to budget.
You can’t get a silk purse from a sow’s ear. You have to spend money to get a quality film. No one wants to front the money.
High-quality fantasy is hot right now, though, it’s not as risky as some people think.

Agree. With the success of TLotR movies and now superhero movies, a big money production of a D&D story would kill.
