Providence, RI is less than 200k. Ditto Wilmington, DE and Akron, OH. That's about the size of Shreveport.
"Metropolitan Providence" is 1.6 million - about 4 times the size of "Metropolitan Shreveport". Most urban populations in the Northeast are limited by their geographical size. In Colonial America, land was much more expensive in burgeoning cities so landownwers bought up the cheaper surrounding land and creating townships that limited the ability of cities like Boston and Providence to expand. Jacksonville is 748 square miles. Houston is 600 square miles. Providence is 18.5 square miles.

Pittsburgh. Not knowing the actual number of people who live there, I thought the city would be huge. I visited it 3 times last year for work, and didn't find it to be as big as New Orleans. It could have been, but driving around, and exploring, it did not seem like it.
