I would have thought they were decent, logical, hard working, middle of the road, individualists up there.

This. I've spoken with several Minnesotans who are right leaning and claim the Twin Cities basically dictate the entire state. Their left wing economic policies have made it such an expensive state, many families in rural areas are - especially close to the border - are either moving to Wisconsin or forced to shop there.
