What it does suggest is that capitalism isn't inherently linked to democracy and freer forms of government as Western Liberalism had believed from the Enlightenment onward. We will see if China will liberalize it's political structure in the next few decades.

Alternatively, it could show that capitalism can democratize,and it doesn't have to go the other way first.

I think they are likely to liberalize in less-essential ways, but the CCP likely realizes the troubles that come from divided power being subject to the whims of the polity. Control of policy is very unlikely to be affected by popular assent, I think.
