Been this way for a long time. My mother and her older brother went to a high school on the south-west side that was largely in a nearly all-white working-class neighborhood. In the early 70s, they started busing kids in from other neighborhoods to diversify schools.
Needless to say, there was a massive race riot the first week which resulted in a bus fully occupied that ended up being flipped. I can't confirm or deny my uncle participated in helping to flip the bus.
