I want to stay within a days drive of Louisiana, with my sister living here, I am trying to stay somewhat south for weather reasons, I want to live close enough to a big metropolitan area where there is tons to do. It’s a plus that there is mountains within a short drive and beaches within a moderate drive
And you are not looking at Birmingham... why?

Drive to LA... 6.0 hrs BHM to BTR including 2 gas/pee/food stops (I'm old, dammit. You kids can do it with 1).
Mountains... mountain-top park in the freaking middle of town.
Beaches... closer to BHM than ATL (right down I-65).
Weather... we're not Fargo.
Close to big metro... 2 hours and change to hit the Micro Center in Marietta, then turn around and get the F out.
