In any of these situations, you are your first line of defense. You can’t expect the police to come charging in to the rescue. We have seen it over and over again, from Columbine to the Pulse nightclub, to the venue in Paris. In an active shooter situation, police are going to set up a perimeter long before they enter a building with an active shooter. It makes no sense to me that we are not actively drilling and teaching kids basic survival skills in these situations. We’ve told them to lock the doors and hide. Those scared kids yesterday had no idea that updating their Snapchat live as the shooting was taking place was the wrong thing to do. They should have been armed with desks, staplers, books bags and anything else they could turn into a weapon in the event he breached the classroom door.
