75% of the time I offer food (instead of $) to the begging homeless guy, I get an eat shite look.

I bet the results here are similar.

I had this very same thought. There would be no more opportunity for them to sell food stamps for cash or to use it to buy junk.

Years ago, I thought I would be kind and hand out twenty $10 Visa gift cards to homeless people in mid/downtown Houston. I stopped my car, walked over to a small group of people and offered them one card each. They actually got pissed and one guy said, "WTF am I supposed to do with this?". I told him that you could buy food anywhere with it. He told me that I needed to come back with cash. I told them best of luck but I was not coming back. In my head, I was thinking "Beggars can't be choosers, a-hole".

That's very unfortunate. I also give food instead of money, and I always get very grateful responses.
