quote:I agree. Education is no substitute for experience and experience is no substitute for education. The best candidates typically have both unless their genius is so transcendent that it no longer matters.
The problem is that education doesn’t always teach those about the real world until the real world is actually experienced.
quote:Of course. Same boat...
I have both an undergraduate and graduate degree and STILL have a lot to learn in my field.
quote:Absolutely. But we have to have *some* metrics. I learned things in school that allowed me to take advantage of my experience in ways I never could otherwise.
ith that being said, I know people who never even went to college who are still extremely successful in their careers because of work ethic
quote:Perhaps but I would caution you from taking isolated cases that round the Cable News circuit and assuming its typical. Freaking out about the way 18-22 year olds handle stress and problems is not all that productive. With life experience these things will work themselves out.
To me, that’s what is killing our education system....victimhood and entitlement....instead of earning that success. Take a look at some of our colleges today. Safe spaces? Are you freaking kidding me? How about challenging life face to face?
quote:If folks feel marginalized or disadvantaged by the system this is a hard sell. You might not agree with it but it isn't like this country has always been a "work harder and be better than the competition and you will succeed". We had institutional discrimination that included violence and murder to go along with inequality in opportunity. You are no better than the "safe space" crowd if you put your head in the sand and pretend there isn't a historical basis for this belief.

quote:I'm not a millenial so I can't speak to it. That said, as with all generations you have folks that are successful and capable and folks that get in their own way. The older folks have been freaking out about the behavior of new generations in the work place for as long as our economy has existed.
Yes, you may get a job in the real world with an education. But you’ll get run off the second your supervisor hurts your fee fees, and you go run into your safe space.

Yeah, back during the Jim Crow era in the early 1960s. Today, opportunity is a lot more reachable if you allow it to be. The problem is that people just don’t want to take the chance and play “victim” when things don’t do their way. Failure sucks. We can all agree on that. But sometimes it takes failure to open yourself up to success later.
