I'm going to convert my laptop from the old hard drive to a SSD.
SANDISK? Passport? Insignia? Samsung?
I'd like 1TB storage but I could settle for 500GB.

Sandisk is rock solid. Not the fastest drives on the market but that certainly won't matter when upgrading from a spinner.

Yea if I'm getting an SSD as a lone drive storage (for boot and mass storage), I'm getting the best value I can. The speeds will be so negligible compared to the high end drives it's just not worth the extra costs IMO.
For sole boot drives like 128gb/256gb I can understand going with a higher end faster drive

Yeah I'm sure anything will be an upgrade over my current hard drive, and I'm more concerned about reliability and quality than speed.
If yall are saying that 1TB scandisk for $250 is solid, I might just go with that

On a related note, how hard is it to switch out the old hard drive for the new SSD by myself?

easy. are you going to do a clean install or clone your existing drive?

Haven't really decided yet but I'm very strongly leaning towards a clean install. I figure I can just use the old HD as an external dive and transfer over my documents and photos but leave all the other shite behind, right?

Thats a good way to do it. Clean installs are always nice too since it de-junks the PC
Edit: Make sure you have a flash drive handy so you can create a bootable USB drive to install windows again

I've had great success with Samsung and HP.

Can I just screw the old hard drive into an external shell and access its files that way?

Any suggestions of a video or site with instructions to walk me through it?

If you have a 2.5" HDD (from a laptop) get this

do you have a windows iso file?
if so, just how you were going to burn your boot cd. download rufus and make a boot usb.

on my mac I docked the new ssd and plugged into usb, downloaded new OS and installed to the SSD drive. Once done, I turned off the laptop, swapped old drive for ssd and powered it right up, never skipped a beat. Don't know if you can do similar for your laptop?? Seems like you should be able to designate where you want to install the OS.

Awesome. Thanks. And i just ordered the case off Newegg.
You have a suggestion for something to walk me through the steps of changing the drives or is it as simple as remove old. Insert new. Boot.

That's all I did. Watched a generic youtube about swapping a macbook drive and it was easy. I'm sure youtube has plenty of similar videos that will get you close.

Yep just swap out the drives, plug in the flash drive with windows and boot from the flash drive.
You may have to go into the bios to change the boot drive to the flash drive, but that's very simple
