Depends on when exactly you are talking about. The story was fluid. The value of tending to God's Will was a common theme - and God's Will was held to be that "the races were intended to be separate". In another version, blacks/slaves were viewed as being literally inferior, and thus the Christian act of love and charity was to "support" these lesser brethren - through slavery. There was also voiced an evangelistic rationale - we're rescuing these savages from Africa and bringing them to the New World to be gospelized. etc.etc.
