Easy fix to this - change it from a spot foul to a 15 yard (maybe 10 yard) penalty. The fact that a defender can make one mistake and cost his team 40 FRICKING YARDS BECAUSE OF A PENALTY FLAG is absolutely ridiculous.

I get that the spot foul is tough, but if you do this it will just encourage anyone that is beat on a deep ball to just tackle the receiver and avoid a huge gain by the other team.
Maybe you make different classes of penalties, 10, 20, 30 yards, etc. depending on the depth of the throw with spot fouls to the one only on something that occurs in the endzone.
