oh he may very well bet on himself that he can.

but because it's "late" in the game, the number of openings is lower than had this happened immediately after the season.

I believe someone posted that $3.25 mil over 2 years is what his original buyout was.
He settled for $1.7
a difference of $1.55 mil

he needs to average $775 over 2 years to break even.

due to the small pool of openings, if he doesn't land a gig this year, he needs to hit the entire $1.55 mil next year.

Again, I don't necessarily disagree. Just answering the question of why he would take a lesser buyout. Whether it works or not remains to be seen.

Regardless, it is a very interesting tactic that I don't think I've seen before, but expect to see more of going forward given the egos of most coaches.
