The board was locked at a 4/4 vote. Since the passing of Mr. Luddy Herpin, the Board voted 4/3 to appoint Luddy's replacement. This was the 5th yes vote needed for the contract extension raise

I think this is what really got people pissed off. The school board had been locked up on all the major issues. One of the board members fell sick and missed an extended period of time. The side that lost the sick persons vote wanted to wait for him to return. The side that now outnumbered the other side wanted to vote.

Some things ended up being voted on, with one side now basically having total control of the board.

Fast forward to now.....

The sick board member ended up dieing not long ago. His replacement became a big ordeal, because the side who had the majority of the votes appointed someone they can control. So now they have a 5-3 edge.

Its all pretty shitty politics, by some crappy people (not all of them). You would think people in this position would be able to take each issue separately and vote on what is best. But instead they vote against each other out of spite. And then we wonder why Louisiana education is among the worst in the nation. Like everything else, it starts at the very top.

What makes it even worse is that in instances like this where a board member dies prior to the ending of their term, often times a family member takes their position until the election. The passed board member's son offered to take his position and was told he couldn't because he wasn't in the district, so his wife offered to take his position and Fontana and his ilk voted no and put in someone, like you said, they can control.
