Depends on what events you're using it for and how often you're going to wear it. If it's your only suit and you'll be wearing infrequently, don't spend too much. For all purpose, worsted wool is good. It also depends on how you're built - do you like slim cuts or not? How much are you really willing to spend? Suit Supply has some good stuff for not horribly expensive. J Crew Factory actually has a decent workhorse suit for ~$300. Brooks Brothers stuff is nice and you can find more modern fits. There are also tons of online retailers (Bonobos, Spier Mackay) that can get you good suits and value but you must know your size and read up on fits.
