I’m sure the planning meeting went like this:

We need to get rid of evidence, but we’ve already done the hammer smashing thing and caught flack for it. I know, if we get all incriminating records released to us we can put it in the house and then burn it down. Then we can play the sympathy card, and won’t have to answer questions about it because we can just accuse people of being monsters with emotional arguments about sympathy for what we’ve just lost. It’s perfect!
