It would be a worse monopoly if people were to buy direct. As dealerships started to fold the manufacturer would gain more power over the consumer. That is when you would see Ford, GM & Dodge really run roughshod over people.

A dealer has to worry about their local reputation unlike CEO's sitting in ivory towers looking down on the little people.
