They did. Every Articles of Secession from the Confederate states mentioned slavery. Know what words were not in any of them? States' rights.
And yes, there was slavery in the North. The North wasn't fighting to end slavery. They were fighting to protect the Union. This is middle school level American history that the South has misconstrued since Reconstruction.
