I just don't see what the problem is with giving conference champs and automatic spot, and then having a few wild cards.
It's not a big deal when shitty 9-7 teams win a division in the NFL every once in a while. What's the difference here?
Sure, I get that people don't want conference champs getting auto-bids, because they think college football has the best playoff system that gives you the best chance of having the best team win the title. However, it's the only sport that does it in such a subjective way. We don't know what metrics the committee really values. We don't know how much the eye test comes into play. We don't know all of the biases that some of these guys might have.
Put all the conference champs in, throw in a couple wild cards. You'd have a really entertaining playoff where everything gets determined on the field. It really wouldn't devalue the regular season too much.
