quote:Is that really an advantage though? Universal remotes are overrated IMO. We turn our TV on and off basically once per day. We adjust the soundbar volume on occasion. More than 95% of our button presses are for controlling the Roku, so why would I want all of those other buttons in the way all the time? The Roku (or FireTV) remote is small, light, and has minimal buttons. It's easy to grab and navigate without looking at it. I don't have to press any extra buttons to select what device I'm controlling. A remote for a TV with built in stuff would necessarily be bigger and harder to use without looking.
One remote for everything.
quote:Streaming boxes (or sticks) are so small they're practically invisible. You can velcro the box to the back of the TV if it bothers you. IMO a separate box is a huge advantage due to flexibility.
no boxes.
quote:You don't think you'd buy them more often than you buy TVs?
I'm not buying new boxes that often.
quote:Why not? Is it a cost thing? A cordcutter could buy 5 or 6 new boxes every year with the savings from cutting cable.
That wouldn't make a whole lot of sense as a cord cutter to buy new streaming boxes often.
quote:I think you will be happy to replace a sub-$100 box instead of a $1k TV in that case, right?
I will use the current Roku's and Firetv's i have until they die or there is a very very significant upgrade in their capabilities.
quote:While that is silly, it's not the same thing. Your idea would be more like making the iPhone and Macbook inseparable. So 3 years from now when you want a new phone, you have to buy a new laptop too.
I'm not the guy that goes out and buys the new Iphone every year like an idiot.
quote:Why no picture of a computer? You show the tuner and the storage, but you forgot the little detail that there needs to be hardware to run the OS and apps that do the heavy lifting. Still, no, it's not exceedingly difficult or expensive. It just doesn't make a lot of sense to do it considering TVs and streaming boxes tend to get upgraded on totally different intervals. Also, again, why would I want my media stored on a particular TV rather than on a separate device that all of my others devices can access as well?
This little thing is capable of recording tv off my antenna, plugged into my computer, working through an app.
This little thing is capable of storing tons of hours of recorded shows.
That doesn't seem that difficult to accomplish, or expensive, inside a tv.
