ok . so it seems like this is not a scam or anything. Ive got a few more people coming out in the next few weeks. What type of questions do i need to ask them? What type of materials are you using? i'm sure that will come with the quote. So someone mentioned the workmanship warranty or something like that. anything else?

Get a measurement or quantity on the amount of shingles he is quoting. Saying home is 3100 sqft is irrelevant. A two story home will use far fewer shingles than a ranch. If he quotes 50 squares and only uses 42, does that come off the bill? Get referrals.

Ask how many nails per shingle and if they hand nail or use a gun. 4 nails per shingle is standard, but if wind gets high 5 or six isn't a bad idea, and hand nailed is preferable.
Ask how many times they will pass the magnet after they complete work. You don't want to find a roofing nail with your foot. They should pass a magnet around the perimeter at least 3 times.
