I don't know when it began, but it is not limited to football and it is not limited to the NFL.

It is played prior to all sporting events. National Anthems of countries are played prior to International Matches such as Hockey or FIFA Soccer matches. They are played at the Olympics during the awarding of medals.

So it is not limited to America.

America is the only country that plays it before EVERY sporting event. The rest only do it in a sporting event where they are playing FOR their country against another country. They do not play it before a normal sporting event involving teams from their country. It is not played before Premier League games, La Liga games, etc. Only the US does that. It makes sense for it to be played before an international game or the Olympics because those events are about country. The Lions and the Saints are not repressing America. The NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL players do not play for America, they do not have to love America more than anything like some people do, they do not even have to be American and a sizable majority are not. The US is just the country they happen to live in and they do not have to have blind patriotic love for America if they do not want to. You also do not have to love where you live whether it is country or city or state or whatever. If God forbid I were forced to move to Tuscaloosa I wouldn't all of a sudden be yelling Roll Tide and signing my heart out to Rammer Jammer just cause I live there. If the players have issue with something in this country and don't want to stand for the anthem then that is their right. Why it bothers people so much I will never understand. Our players have not sat or knelt DURING the anthem in weeks so I have no fricking clue why this is continually talked about on SAINTS TALK.
