But then you had Citizen Kane, which had been rotating on local TV stations since the 50's and Wizard of Oz, which was shown once a year on network TV going back to the 50's. So it was hit and miss as to which "big" films were special enough to not be on TV all of the time.

When a really big movie came to TV it was a really big deal. Kids would talk about it in school the next day.
