I get spam emails every single day. I'd say 80% or more are from .edu addresses.

Facebook was actually useful when it first opened at UT and only had college people on it. You could input your class schedule and instantly see who else had the same classes. There wasn't a bunch on garbage on it. I was there when it started in 04/05 time frame when it was still thefacebook.com. It was nice.
MySpace on the other hand was a wasteland of idiocy. Restricted social media is usually a lot more useful than open nonsense. You can even see that on forums. Forums dedicated to certain topics are very useful, forums open to anything and everything, not much so. TD walks the line on this a lot.
