I'm an NP in an ER.....one thing I have learned is to never guess. I have seen swollen ankles I would have bet the farm were broke and vice versa.
X-ray is the only definitive way to know if it is broken, outside the bone sticking out the skin. Bite the bullet and get an x-ray. Otherwise quityerbitchin, and suck it up.
