I had this problem recently. Would start and go dead. The fuse holder had completely melted down and the fuse in it. There was just a tiny amount of metal wire that would connect, but when mower started, it would create enough vibration to separate the wires.
That fuse I believe connects power to the starter solenoid, which also connects power to the fuel solenoid.
Check your fuse holder if it has one. Also could try bypassing your fuel solenoid. That would tell you a lot if it cranks. Also try spraying starter fluid into carburetor as soon as it cranks. That will help you eliminate some possibilities.

fuse holder
Where would a man find the fuse holder on this particular mower?
