Portable generator modification

OK I had another thread last week about portable gensets and I appreciate all the suggestions & recommendations. I bought the Generac GP 5500.
Anyway I started it for the 1st time yesterday and TBH it wasn't as loud as I expected (Hammertime said it would be LOUD) BUT if I wanted to "quiet it down" a little is it possible to add a muffler onto the existing muffler? OK I'm a first time genset owner so take it easy.

Waste of time, and the added backpressure isn't good for a small engine. I just lean scrap plywood up against it to deflect the sound. It is a noticeable reduction in sound, and I have a bunch of old plywood laying around.
People also make plastic boxes for them with fans and exhaust vents, and I believe a couple of companies sell them

Thanks Hammer.....yeah I was thinking about the same thing but just wanted to ask the question anyway. I think even pointing the muffler away from the house would dampen the sound a bit too. Like I said it wasn't as loud as I thought it would be.

Make sure it's placed so as CO doesn't enter your house. Also if you're not sure get a CO monitor.

This^^^ I have 3 pieces cut that I place on top and two sides, works great

Just make sure it has decent air flow and don't cover the exhaust with the plywood. Two old sheets of 1/4 OSB is what I use

I will....I may even cut a hole where the muffler is
