What's so hard about keeping it off the ground? I've never broken one.

It would probably be a quarter inch thick and weigh 4x what the entire phone weighs now.

Making a shatterproof screen is simple. The downside is it will collect scratches like crazy.

It's also simple to make a screen scratch resistant. The downside is it will be brittle as frick and shatter easily.

What's hard is making a screen shatterproof and scratch resistant, because it needs properties of both hard things (scratch resistance) and soft things (shatterproof).

So in short I'm not sure why it's so hard to make something that's hard and soft at the same time.

They've been out a couple of years - the Moto Z series. They ARE guaranteed shatterproof however, the top layer of the (laminated) screen is not glass & therefore, not as resistant to scratches as is Gorilla Glass. Simple solution - do as I did & put on a Verizon brand flexible glass screen protector the minute you unbox the phone. Virtually impossible to detect and provides the best of everything in addition to being a terrific device. I haven't checked in a while so I don't know if any of the midrange Motorolas offer shattershield or not.
