True.Snopes is often not correct. In this case, they are correct. CIA analysts often reported on media reports.The use of the word "authoritative" referring to a known fake news outlet gives away the game. He was pranking his co-workers.Little did he know he was pranking people decades later as the CIA did their routine "declassify" dumps.
(Sorry to demystify things, but the CIA is not that impressive an agency. It is mostly made up of bored nerds).
