Supposedly, around 1970 he guest hosted the Tonight Show and told a joke about being on a plane with a broken toilet so he waited until they were flying over Mississippi and then "used the bathroom" -- that is, he pissed on Mississippi.
All hell broke loose, with the Gov of MS calling the president of NBC demanding an apology. The next night Lewis gave a half-hearted You-can't-take-a-joke, I'm-not-really-sorry apology. I'd love to see this clip, but I don't know if it even still exists (most Tonight Shows pre '72 were erased)
