Honestly this seems like the answer, add memorials to abused slaves and underground railroad workers. They really are underrepresented when it comes to public memorials. So build up more, don't tear down, and then everyone wins.
But that's probably dumb hippie thinking.

While I don't agree with removing the statues, this is such a shitty defense.
It's as dumb as arguing the statues represent white supremacy.
