Sorry... didn't realize you were talking full size pistols. I was referring to my shield 9mm and NO, the safety on this one isn't spongy and as for the slide... well maybe for your wife it's easy but mine has lost some strength.

The shield is definitely a different story - safety actuation is a little more positive and the slide is much stiffer because of the short stout recoil spring. But with some practice on an easier full size gun and practicing racking form, most people could work a shield slide too.
