AI is in its absolute infancy and it's already changing the face of modern business. And it is not far off from completely revolutionizing our capacity to automate common tasks (check out The Master Algorithm by Domingos). Even if the rate of development slows significantly, the rate of impact on society will be extremely rapid.
Yes some new jobs will be created (see my example with the lawyer quality checker). But it seems very unlikely that the new jobs created will outpace the jobs destroyed.

It's a lot easier to predict which jobs will disappear than it is to predict which ones will be created.
Nobody 10 years ago would've predicted Uber would employ 300,000 drivers, but they could've easily said, "Duh. We won't have cashiers anymore."
I truly believe that most people with the darkest of predictions about unemployment due to automation are hoping for it because they like the idea of paychecks for nothing and a lifetime of vacay at the expense of the real innovators. If that day comes, Ayn Rand's prophesy will come true.
