A few more days left on the Big Island but thought I'd share since this board helped me decide which island to visit.

Disclaimer: I've never been to another Hawaiian island and I'm sure each has great experiences. Here's mine:

1st 3 nights stayed at VRBO house just north of Hilo (east side) on a cliff overlooking the pacific. We did the waterfalls, Waipio Valley, lava flows at night at ocean entry and up the mountain within 10 feet of lava. Akaka zip line tour as well.

Last 5 nights at the fairmont orchid on the kohala coast. Also visiting hapuna beach and night snorkel with mantas. We swam with sea turtles every day at the resort and enjoyed great food and spectacular sunsets.

Incredibly diverse island. We fell in love with it and could have used a few more days to see the rest of it.

I enjoyed living there for 2 years. I finally went back for the first time in a 14 years in early June. Such a neat place.

I want to know more about seeing the lava flow. I'm thinking about making a trip to the big island in the next couple of years. How visible is the flow itself? I really want to capture some nice photos of it. Would you recommend seeing it by land, air or sea?

It depends. The lava flow is always changing. We saw by air and land.

The aerial view of the ocean entry and feeling the heat hovering over the crater lava lake was worth the price of admission.

I think viewing the ocean entry by boat would be the best view of quickly flowing lava entering the ocean but not sure how close they can get.

On land, right now you drive to the end of chain of craters road and park. There are several bike vendors set up there and will rent a bike for around $20 which includes a bike mounted light a head mounted light a lock and water. You ride 5 miles out to the roped off ocean entry point and are probably 100 yards away from the lava. If you go northeast from there for about a mile through some pretty nasty lava fields (night with little sense of direction for where you're headed) you might find lava on the surface. We did and got within 10 feet of it. It wasn't flowing rapidly more of an ooze but simply incredible.
