Can you tell us the route you took
I started in Amarillo, headed west on I-40 (Route 66), spent the night in Tucumcari, then west and north to Madrid & Santa Fe. Headed south to White Sands but stayed in Roswell. Went to Carlsbad Caverns and White Sands again.
If I do it again, I would spend first night in Tucumcari with just a couple hour stop in Amarillo for the Cadillac Ranch. Amarillo is nice but I was looking for modern ruins and old motels, not a modern city. Tucumcari is less than 2 hours from Amarillo. It's about a 14 hour drive to Tucumcari from Baton Rouge. I would spend more time in Santa Fe/Madrid/Old Albuquerque, and completely not got to Roswell. I would stay in Cloudcroft in the south, up in the mountains between White Sands and Carlsbad.
