quote:In his defense, he might have a citation for what he said.
Yeah I'm sure police in the south played a part in that. That wasn't what Gary was saying. He said they came into existence in America and were created to capture slaves. That's completely false
Wikipedia
quote:
Notably, the genesis of the modern police organization in the South is the "Slave patrol". [6][7]
Let's delve a bit deeper into the citations:
Citation #6
quote:
Platt, Tony (1982). Crime and punishment in the United States: Immediate and long-term reforms from a Marxist perspective. Social Justice/Global Options.
Maybe it's just me but I kinda tend to discount most studies/works from a Marxist perspective. Surprisingly often, they seem to demonize the current paradigm in favor of Marxism.
I know what some of you are thinking, "But what about citation #7 which is also cited for that nice tidbit of information?" Well citation #7 (Dr. Gary Potter's piece) cites #6.
quote:
In the Southern states the development of American policing followed a different path. The genesis of the modern police organization in the South is the "Slave Patrol" (Platt 1982).
