If you've never done it before I'd take it to someone else to do. It's pretty straight forward, but there are tricks of the trade so to speak.

i have a 2002 75 hp Merc. Mine was doing roughly the same thing. I brought it to Jerry Laloux's Outboard Shop in Gonzales. He will check compression before he does anything else. At that point he will go thru your motor and let you know what's needed to fix it.
It cost me right at $400 for a complete tune up. His shop number is 225-644-3797.
He is an expert in his craft and absolutely honest and straight forward. Hope this helps!!
